With the advent of climate change and the particularly cold winter experienced in 2010-2011, consideration should be given to temperature control within your BundedChemical Store.
Your chemicals may be sensitive to low temperatures, causing them to freeze or crystallize and this can cause irreversible damage to some chemicals. Alternatively, exposure to very high temperatures, can cause some chemicals to become volatile. You should refer to the MSDS(Material Safety Data Sheet) which will be available from your chemical supplier, for advice on the recommended storage conditions for the chemical.
If your chemicals are sensitive to low/freezing temperatures, industrial heaters or air warmers can be fitted in your chemical stores with thermostat control to maintain internal temperatures at preset levels, say 15°c. If your chemicals are also sensitive to high temperatures a full temperature control system can be fitted with heating and cooling allowing you to maintain internal temperatures at preset levels, say 17°c +/- 2°c. Temperature displays, chart recorders and links to BMS are fitted also to allow monitoring of the internal temperature, and alarm can be fitted to warn if the temperature goes outside you pre set range.
If your chemicals are highly flammable or are being stored in a flammables store where flammable vapours may be present, then the heating system must be an Atex system(Ex rated), which means that it is suitable for use in flammable atmospheres.
When ordering your Bunded Chemical Store/Safety Store with heating or full temperature control, you should also consider internal segregation or the creation of separate storage compartments within the store. This will allow you to maintain some of your stock at the correct temperature while the store is open for loading/unloading of new stock.
Another factor to consider, particularly if you are using the temperature controlled chemical store to bring your chemicals to the correct temperature for a production process, is how much time you can allow for the chemicals to come to the correct temperature after they have been delivered to the store at ambient
temperature.
Vibrating tables can also be incorporated into the floor of you chemical store above the bund to agitate the chemicals while in storage.
